How Invisalign Works: A Step-by-Step Guide

How Invisalign Works: A Step-by-Step Guide from Mansey Family Dentistry of Washington, LLC in Washington, NJInvisalign is a popular method of straightening teeth because it uses a discreet set of aligner trays. To get the most out of the process, though, patients should understand how it works. Otherwise, they could be unintentionally sabotaging their own progress!

Whether you are still considering Invisalign or already have an appointment set up, knowing what to expect is smart. Here is a step-by-step guide to the main parts of the Invisalign process.

Understanding the Invisalign process

Invisalign is an accessible method of tooth straightening, but it requires commitment from the patient. Frequent visits to the dentist will also be necessary.

Step 1: The consultation

Before Invisalign treatment can begin, patients must be evaluated during a consultation with a dental professional. Not all types of tooth misalignment work with the Invisalign system. Additionally, patients who are honest about their own self-discipline (since the aligners will need to be worn 22 hours a day) may determine that they are not a good fit.

The dentist will examine the patient’s mouth to see whether the force exerted by the aligner trays will be sufficient to address their specific misalignment. If so and if the patient agrees to Invisalign, the process can move forward.

Step 2: The tray creation

Once patients are ready to start with Invisalign, the dentist will take an impression of their entire dental arch. This is typically done with a mold material that is pressed against the teeth, but certain offices use laser scanners that can digitize the topography of the mouth.

As soon as the dentist has a “map” of the patient’s teeth, they can use this information to create a series of customized aligner trays that snap onto the teeth. Patients must always wear their trays as intended, as the entire treatment series is created at the beginning!

Step 3: Aligner changes

Every few weeks, the patient will visit the dentist’s office to pick up a new set of aligner trays. Each set will be slightly different than the last, gradually moving the teeth into their new positions.

Step 4: Completion

Once a patient has completed their entire series of Invisalign trays, their teeth should be in the proper positions! However, if they were not consistent with wearing their trays, they may need additional treatment, and more trays will need to be created to compensate for their dental changes. Most patients will wear an overnight retainer to preserve the results of their Invisalign treatment once it is complete.
